Temperament

Pit bulls are fun-loving family pets. When raised properly they are wonderful around people and children. They are strong dogs who are eager to please. They may exhibit their prey drive and show aggression towards other dogs. This is normal as you can see many breeds display this type of behavior. With the proper pit bull obedience training you will have loving dog that respects people and animals and most importantly, your commands.

Breeds, Pregnancy and Life Expectancy

There are three different breeds of pit bulls known as the American Pit bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The pregnancy duration for a female pit bull is approximately 9 weeks. Litter sizes usually range around 5-10 puppies with a life expectancy of 12 years.  Depending on the breed of pit bull they can grow to an adult weight to as little as 25 pounds and as much as 90 pounds.

Diet, Health and Exercise

Like most dogs, pit bulls will benefit the most from a diet consisting of organic dog food or a raw diet. Compare the different types and select which is best suited for you and your pit bull. Pit bulls are generally healthy dogs although some may experience health problems such as allergies, skin problems or hip dysplasia to name a few. Pit bulls are muscular and energetic which requires daily exercise. If time management is something you like to practice than clicker training may be the method of choice for you. You can train your pit bull while he gets his daily exercise at the same time. Your pit bull will love it.

Training

As we mentioned earlier, if you would like to save some money and train your pit bull on your own you can pickup or even download an inexpensive pit bull obedience training or clicker training program. They are simple and easy to do with guaranteed results. The only requirement is just a consistent effort on your part. Even a few minutes a day will go a long way and you will be glad you did it. It’s the responsibility of every pit bull owner to train their dog whether it’s by a professional or on their own. Its irresponsible owners that worsen a pit bull’s reputation. This paints a picture of a dog who can snap at any moment, calling for breed specific legislation. There are many books, ebooks and training systems available to you.
